Celebrate 150 years of caring!
2008 is a very exciting year for Jewish Care Scotland as we celebrate 150 years of continuous care for Jewish people in need.
The Glasgow Hebrew Philanthropic Society, first recorded in 1858, dispensed charity to the needy in Glasgow’s then tiny Jewish community.
Most Jewish families (our grandparents and great grandparents) who arrived in Glasgow in the 19th century were fleeing anti-Semitic pogroms in Russia and eastern Europe where so many were barred from earning a living, studying or entering the professions.
Living and working conditions in Glasgow for poor people could be harsh. The founding fathers of the Glasgow Hebrew Philanthropic Society began a tradition of caring for others that has stood the test of time and still flourishes today.

Over the 150 years as the organisation has changed its name and its functions, it has adapted to the needs of the community. Consistently, since those earliest days, the charity, with the support of the community, has continued caring for Jewish people in need regardless of age or background. Unemployment, poverty, illness, disability and distress of any sort were helped with compassion and resourcefulness.
To help us continue our work, we are embarking on a series of fund raising initiatives over this year. The first is the ability to make donations to us directly from this website! Please click here to find out how.
Before doing so why not browse through our website to see what we do today.
I do hope you will join with us in 2008 as we continue to support around one in five Jewish families in Scotland.
Many thanks to you all.
